100 días

10 862.974 km from my Finnish home, 100 days in my new one

So it's been 100 days! Worth a shot in Spanish too haha. I wrote that one first so English & Finnish are just translations. I'd also have our amazing Oriente trip and lots of other things to tell about, but since my laptop doesn't want to work I'll just do this little update for now!

Why am I sometimes sad? What do I mean when I say that sometimes it's difficult? I'll tell you, but excuse me this is something that in English is called 'deep shit'.
It's a bit hard to live with another language. I hate it that I always have to ask hundreds of questions because I don't understand what's happening or what will happen or anything. I hate it that sometimes I just can't understand my ecuadorian friends (I love them a lot it's not that 💛) and when I can't understand anyone I feel a bit lonely as you can imagine. I'm used to being independent also in my other home country Finland (it's a country in the North of Europe and for example Nokia and Angry Birds come from there!! How weird is it to be from a country that no one knows haha) but when my stupid laptop breaks or the police can't help me with my insurance or I'm sick and don't know what to do because everything is so different, I'd like to have my dad to help me with the technology and my mom to tell me what to do, and my sister to spend sleepovers with. When I lived with my Finnish family I always felt like I just want to get away and live alone so it might sound a bit weird to say this, but when you actually do live alone at the other side of the planet, you'll know what I mean. There are a lot of people and a lot of things that I miss a lot, but I also know that when I'll have to go to Finland I'll miss everyone and everything from here just as much, maybe more. It's a bit complicated to feel like home in two different countries, but it's definitely worth it! Some days just are harder than others. I've already been here for 100 days so I've had time for the bad days too, but for sure there have been a lot lot more of the good days! I love Ecuador and our tiny but lovely Salcedo and my friends here  and of course the ice cream too haha! And since it's Thanksgiving I can say that I'm really grateful for everything that I've seen and experienced here already now! And I'm really looking forward to everything that still will come!

Jotkut päivät vaan on vähän vaikeanpia.

What do I miss from Finland?

Hello hello, it's been a while again! All good in Ecuador and my love for this country and the people just keeps getting stronger every day, but I'd really like my stomach illness to already go away. I always thought that I could eat anything because I've never had problems with food anywhere, but then again I've never been this long in another country (almost three months!) so I guess that might explain why I've had some kind of food poisoning already three times. And this one has lasted for a week already which isn't really divertida... But I think that I'm finally getting back to business! I hope. This far I've only had energy to watch Modern Family in bed from my cellphone (my laptop doesn't work - sigh, I haven't had the best of luck lately) and by this speed the episodes will soon run out! And the thing is that atleast for me, when I'm home sick I also get a bit homesick. As I've mentioned earlier I really feel like home here and Ecuador will forever be my second home country after everything that's happened here, but home's still home. So that made me write about this rather basic topic of exchangers; homesickness. This of course depends a lot on the person and on the host country and one's situation and all, so these are just my thoughts!
So I'm not really a homesick - type of person and anyways there's so much new and exciting every day that there really isn't much time to miss home, and the country and the people are doing a good job making me happy. But when I'm feeling down I'd love a piece of Fazer while watching a movie in English on our grey couch with my family or friends. Family and friends and Fazer too I've mentioned many times already, but what else is there that I miss then?

- the language: I love Spanish and hearing it all around and being able to speak and understand it now, but there still are conversations that would be a lot easier if I could use all the words that I have in my mind.

- my room: I've got a 'my room' here too, but it still isn't 100% mine with the decorations of the host family and with out my full bookself and the wall colors that I chose and then covered with hundreds of photos. And my wardrobe full of clothes and desk full of school or craft supplies, I could go to the store yep but this far I've just been lost when I've had to make a birthday card or glue something in my notebook or use another pair of pjs! I thought that I was a smart packer but I packed only one pair of long pj pants and since the nights here are rather cold I was happy to find this ridiculous pair from the market that I can't be serious with but keeps me warm at night.

- the food: I really like ecuadorian food (oh I still haven't told much about that, coming soon!) but they don't eat lots of salads here so I'd do anything for a salad made with my mom or grandmom -you don't know what a good salad is until you've tasted those-, or the tradicional makaroonilaatikko or grilled sausages. What's weird about this is that I never used to be a fan of sausages, but what you don't have you miss right? And I think that it's mostly the summer dinners outside with my family that I miss, and sausages just happened to be a part of it. I'm also craving for a sandwich with butter and cucumber slices and oltermanni! The bread here is delicious but they almost never use butter - needless to say oltermanni.

Puhumattakaan oltermannista!

- rye bread!! This just deserves it's own line.

- ruisleipä!! Se ansaitsee oman rivinsä.

- Fazer & salmiakki: I still have a few with me but just a few! And I actually miss just basic fazer candy now too, even thought those I don't buy that often in Finland either. But atm I'd love to walk in S-Market to buy Choco Remix, mm even the thought about it is delicious!

- internet: Here internet isn't like for us in Finland, it's normally always used just with wifi! This I found really strange at the beginnig and I still have some troubles with not being able to snapchat live haha. And also to the internet category, not so many people here use Snapchat or instagram, mostly just Facebook (there you have one of the reasons why I've started overusing it) with which we Finns more or less gave up already some years ago.

- some characteristics: This is a strange thing to miss and a bit strange to explain but I'll try. As much as I love the kisses on the cheeks and the socialness of the locals and other things that I really wish we had more in Finland, sometimes it's the other way around. Most of all the problem sometimes still is that I just don't understand the way the ecuadorians act and I don't know how I should act because I don't know what's normal here and how they'll react and what their reactions mean. And they are more childish here that's a fact almost in every case, but who said that was bad? Just different. So sometimes I sit in the class room looking around and just thinking to myself 'what the heck is going on?'. I already feel a part of the people here but sometimes this still happens.

Erilaista vaan. Joskus istun luokassa ja vasn mietin ittekseni 'mitä ihmettä täällä tapahtuu?', vaikka yleensä jo tunnen olevani osa porukkaa.

- the 'moderness': and I'm not now talking about machines (there are almost no dishwashers and even thought most have a washing machine they also have a place to wash clothes by hands, but other than that electronics are more or less the same) or even cars (haven't seen one Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz or actually any other European car here, almost all are Asian), but just the fact that even thought this country is in the middle of the world it still is kind of far from it. It's one of the reasons why I'm so happy to be here, I wanted different and that I got! But sometimes I miss a little bit the clothes that are popular in western countries at the moment instead of 7 years ago, the using of internet again and overall the fact that things are 'up to date'. I think that it's good that things aren't so mainstream here and people aren't posting Starbucks pics with their Victoria's Secret bags in them, but sometimes it'd be nice to get a glimpse of something that's popular where I come from.

- baking: As the people who know me know, I love baking! But here in a strange kitchen with strange ingredientes it's just not that simple. Of course I could put more effort into it and I soon will, I'm just gonna have to improvise a little but I'm sure that it'll be worth it. And even something simple would be good! Read: I hope my hostfamily likes mudcake. Also cooking I miss, this I could more or less do but it's a bit difficult because of the schedule of the host family; they want the food to be ready when I'm just arriving from school. But there are exceptions too so we'll make it work!

- school: Okay well I don't really miss lukio that much, but it's just really different here. Instead of getting graded by the neatness of my notes I would love to focus on just learning things (of course they do that too but the problem is that Im used to making my notes just for myself so they're not exactly pretty), and also sometimes a change of the language would make the lessons a lot easier.

- seasons: I've always thought that I'd love to live in a place where there's always summer, but I actually turned out to miss thw chilly autumn mornings with hot chocolate and sweaters a bit! I'm really confused with the seasons here, even the locals don't really know what session it is now! But that's because there isn't really a big difference between them.

- last but not least (the opposite actually, the thing that I miss the most), the easiness: By this I mean everything that I've said above and everything that I still haven't said. The easiness of knowing what's happening, what you have for homework, where can you buy cartoons for a school project (this I actually learned already but it's a good example), easiness of texting in whatsapp to your friend to ask where is she/he at the moment and if she/he'd like to join you where ever you are (even without wifi), going to a cafe after school without having to worry about messing with the hostfamily's schedule (they do let me go out it's not that), opening the TV and knowing form which channel at which time your favorite show comes (it doesn't, but for that there's netflix) , knowing the area around you properly (getting there!) and knowing how to take the buss (there too!) and going to the store to buy a new tangle teezer since my previous got lost at school (but they don't sell them here) without having to answer three questions that I don't understand and the cajer, one being 'what's your ID-number'. Even with these examples I still can't put it into words what I really mean, but you'll find out if you'll live in another country with another family.

So just to make sure that this long, sad-sounding list didn't make you think wrong, I'm gonna say it once more: I'm really really happy here, I love my class and my friends and my host family does tons for me, the ice cream here is really good and the summer weather and sun are perfect and there's a list of things that I love here that would be ten times longer than this list, but that's for another day! Some days I just miss home a bit more, and this has been one of those days. Lots of hugs to everyone, I miss you ❤

Paljon haleja kaikille, ikävä on. ❤
