Nariz Del Diablo

I can´t believe that it´s been already half of my exchange year. So much has happened that it feels that it´s actually been a lot longer, but at the same time I can´t believe how fast time has gone. I think that I´ve used the same words over again, but I could repeat myself over and over again and still couldn´t really explain everything for you. Exchange year is a life on on a year, so it does include quite a lot of things and feelings. I´ve already now learned so much about myself, about Ecuador, about Spanish and about the world, and Im so looking forward to everything that I´m going to learn! I appreciate every single second that I´ve spent here, even the hardest ones, because they are the ones that have taught me the most. And the happiest moments are the ones that I´m going to remember still when I´m old and wrinkly and traveling the world with my rollator. And all these people, my life wouldnt be the same if I hadnt met them. Same goes for these places and views all around me, trust me when I tell you that it is kinda cool to live in the middle of the Andies,or on the Andies more especifically. I´m so grateful also for all the people who have helped me so much with everything, my host family, my area coordenador, my e

xchange friends who always know what I´m going trough, my friends and family in Finland who´re always supporting me and listening to my endless rant about everything I´m going trough. And my local friends for showing me around my home town and other places and for showing me what real ecuadorian friendships are like - and they´re great.

It might hve been just a great coincidence with the week my exchange friends from Ambato (the biggest town close to Salcedo, also my ´base´ town where my area coordenador lives) decided for a famous tourist attraction, Nariz del Diablo train trip. It was on my list already before coming here so I was really happy to see it and with great company! I must admit that I thought that it would have been more extreme maybe, but I wasn´t dissapointed for sure - the views are really beautiful. First we had to take a bus to Riobamba (another beautiful town in the Sierra) , and from there to Alausi, which was full of blond and English speaking people! In other words, tourists. Especially where I live I almost never see any, so it´s always a nice surprise! And you always have interesting conversations with them - one thing I´ve learned here; open your mouth! Unlike we Finns believe, they´re actually normally not mad that you talk to them! ;)

Feliz Año Nuevo!

I have so much cathing up to do -so many stories to tell! About this past year and especially about my time here in Ecuador. That will be one of my New Year's resolutions, here and now I promise to fill in also the blind spots that I've left on my blog! So today we're celebrating New Years all around the world, but here it's actually called Año Viejo, "old year", because the day is deligated for the past year and getting ready for the new one. Tomorrow, the 1st of 2016, is already called Año Nuevo. Here in Ecuador this part of the year includes lots of traditions that atleast I find really interesting so I'll tell a bit more about them.

Mulla on taas hirmu paljon kerrottavaa ja edelleen jäljellä vaikka kuinka paljon tarinointia tältä edeltävältä vuodelta ja varsinkin mun neljästä kuukaudesta täällä Ecuadorissa. Mun yksi ensi vuoden lupauksista onkin että aion täyttää kaikki aikasemmin tänne blogiin jääneet aukot! Tänään siis joka puolella planeettaa juhlitaan uutta vuotta niinkuin tietysti täälläkin, mutta ecuadorilaisittain vuoden viimeinen päivä tunnetaan paremmin Año Viejo-na, eli "vanhana vuotena". Se on nimittäin omistettu vanhan vuoden muistelulle/päättämiselle ja uuden vuoden aloittamiselle. Täällä päiväntasaajan maassa tähän aikaan vuodesta kuuluu myös useita perinteitä jotka ainakin musta on tosi kiinnostavia, joten tässä tulee niistä vähän lisää!

0n December 31st you're supposed to eat 12 grapes, each representing good luck for each month of the starting year. / Joulukuun viimeisenä tulee syödä 12 viinirypälettä,  ne tuovat jokaiselle tulevalle kuulle hyvää onnea.

Yellow/ red underwear / Keltaiset/punaiset alusvaatteet

Wearing yellow underwear on New Years Eve brings you good luck for the next year, and red underwear will bring you love. I've read that the underwear has to be new, but not sure if that's always the case. But better to play safe, right? :D/ Keltaisten alusvaatteiden käyttäminen uuden vuoden aattona tuo tulevalle vuodelle hyväö onnea, ja punaiset alusvaatteet lupaavat tulevalle vuodelle rakkautta. Luin myös jostain että näitten alusvaatteiden tulisi olla uusia mutten siitä ole ihan varma, parempi tietysti ottaa varman päälle eikös? :D

Running around one block with a backbag will bring you traveling for the coming year. / Reppuselässä korttelin ympärijuokseminen lupailee matkustelua uudelle vuodelle. Eikös tästä ole Suomessa joku versio jossa juostaan alasti? Perus Suomi haha!

Clean on 31 and mo cleaning on the 1st! / Siivoa 31 päivä ja ei siivousta 1 päivä!

You should clean the whole house on 31st (like how we here started the day) because on 1st you can't clean unless you want bad luck for you! Cleaning on 31st also represents cleaning away all the bad things from the past year. / Vuoden viimeisenä päivänä kannattaa siivota koko talo (niin kuin täällä meillä aloitettiin päivä) koska ensimmäisenä päivänä ei saa siivota siivota ettei siivoa hyvää onnea pois.

Burning a doll / Nuken polttaminen

In Ecuador an important part of Año Viejo is burning a doll, which represents burning the past year. / Iso osa Año Viejo- juhlaa Ecuadorissa on nuken polttaminen, mikä symboloi kuluneen vuoden polttamista.

This year 2015 has definitely been my best one yet. It's also been the hardest, the most surprising, the loneliest, also the exact opposite of that and the most teachul one yet. I've met so many amazing people, seen so many amazing places and had so many amazing moments all year in both sides of the planet. So from here I wish you all a happy, happy New Year 2016 and that it'll be your greatest one yet!! Make good resolutions and remember not to clean haha ;)

Tämä vuosi 2015 on takuulla ollut paras vuoteni 17 vuotta pitkän elämäni aikana. Se on myös ollut kaikista hankalin, kaikista yllättävin, kaikista yksinäisin, kaikista epäyksinäisin (suomi haloo??) ja kaikista opettavaisin. Olen tavannut niin paljon upeita ihmisiä, nähnyt upeita paikkoja ja viettänyt upeita päiviä molemmilla puolilla planeettaa. Joten täältäkäsin nyt toivottelen super super hyvää uutta vuotta 2016 ja toivon että siitä tulee kaikille vielä parenpi kuin edellinen!! Tehkääs hyviä lupauksia ja muistakaa olla siivoamatta huomenna ;)

The whole day 31st keep a bill in your shoe under your feet to get a promise of lots of money the next year. / Koko 31. päivän ajan kävele seteli kengässä jalkapohjan alla, jotta tulevana vuotena odottaisi paljon rahaa.
