Finnish Christmas

Hullo Honeys!

This day of the year is always one of the busiest, because in Finland we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, 24th December. We continue celebrating on 25th and also 26th, but the Eve is the main day for us. Every family has their own traditions of course, but some of then are the same in all Finnish homes.

1. We have christmas calenders, which start on the first day of December (except one specail calender which starts already on the first advent) and every 'window' has a picture, chocolate or a small gift

2. We decorate the house to Christmas spirit

3. We put Christmas lights outside, not super much but still some

4. We bake gingerbread and Christmas tarts, which are specially shaped sweets with plum jam and drink glog

5. We give christmas presents to our family, friends and neighbours and open them on Christmas Eve somewhere around the Christmas tree (or the couch more often)

6. And we also send cards and packets to the ones who are too far away (my family also sends a Christmas letter to all our foreign friends, but that's not typical in Finland)

7. On Christmas Eve morning/day we go to Church

8. We eat rice porridge and hide an almond in the kettle, the one who gets it onto his/her plate gets to make a wish

9. There's this TV show called ''Santa's Hot line'' where kids can call to talk and sing to Santa Claus, which is also a tradition to watch (and try calling!) almost in every house. After that they show Snowmann on TV which is a traditions as well as the 'Announcement of Christmas Peace' which they show live from Turku, Finland's former Capital.

10. We eat a big Christmas meal including casseroles, ham, different kind of fish and turkey, plus whatever the family chooses.

11. If there are kids in the house, santa Claus comes in the evening of 24th to give the presents. The Finnish story (read: the true one) goes that Santa -Joulupukki- lives in Korvatunturi, Lapland, and comes from there with his sleigh and reindeer and knocks on people's doors and asks 'Are there any good kids here?' - Onko täällä kilttejä lapsia? -. Finnish elves wear red an white costumes, sometimes with grey.

12. We buy or go to the forest to find a christmas tree and decorate it on Christmas Eve (my family) or before that (many other families)

13. On Christmas day we also have a big Christmas meal with family, and the same on Boxing day.

Many Finns go up North for Christmas, me and my family just stay at home or go to central Finland to visit our family, this year it's our turn to host.

I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and / or Happy Holidays!

DIY Last minute Christmas Gift - Peppermint Bodyscrub

Hullo Honeys!

Now we're really close to Christmas! But I can't be the only one who still has some presents to buy and make, right? I think that it is a every year tradition to get the present stress some time of the month! But I'd like to get rid of that tradition and help you get rid of it too, so I'll share this simple and lovely last minute christmas present idea. It's perfect for girl friends or moms or whoever lady in your giftlist, or why not for a guy as well who prefers his skin soft.
The only things you should actually go to store for (if you're an ordinary person with the basic ingredients in the kitchen already, if you're a person like me a.k.a. someone who's always missing flour or something important, check the full list) are glass jars with lids, peppermint essential oil and candy canes. And this is rather fast to make, so it's the perfect present to make on the last day!
I found this idea on Popsugar and made my version f it almost absolutely the same, thank you person behind it!

What you'll need:
4 cups of sugar
1+ cup olive oil (or almond oil/ sunflower oil)
About 15 candycanes
20-40 drops peppermint essential oil
Glass jar(s) with lids
+ a bowl and spoon for mixing (and a sushi stick if your glass jars are thin)
This makes about 4 cups body scrub, I got 7 tiny bottles, and this takes about 20 minutes plus the putting to the jar- part.

1. Crush the candycanes until they're almost powder. It's easiest to do inside a plastic bag so the pieces don't fly all aorund the kitchen.

2. Pour the sugar into a bowl (to a different one than the candycanes!) and make sure there aren't any crumbs.

3.Add the olive oil (that's the best choice when thinking about skin amd doesn't smell as storng as almond oil, but the other oils work just as well) and mix. The mixture shouldn't be too oily but still wet enough, so add just less or more than a cup, depending on what it looks like. You can try the oiliness also with your hands.
4. Add the peppermint essential oil, enough to make it smell good but not too strong.

5. Mix the whole thing and start putting it to the jar with a spoon. If your jar is very thin, you can try to make it more condensed by pressing it with a sushi stick. Haha that's the way I did it :D
6. Make thin layers wiht the candycane-powder between the sugarmixture, I did two of them in the jar. The powder isn't the actual scrub so don't overdose it!

7. Pack the jar nicely and maybe add a note saying the ingredients and how to use it ( I mentioned that shower or someplace other where you can rinse and dry it well) and voila you're done!

Hopefully you and the receiver will like this!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Getting good while doing good

Better late than never!

But, yep, it would be better not to live by that all the time like I do.. Heh

I got an e-mail from Cutey some time ago, asking if I could help them with their campaign called 'Bags for breasts' as it sounds, it's a campaign for helping with breast cancer. Cutey donates 10% of all profits to Women Breast cancer Charity. My close relatives have had breast cancer and I know how common it is, so I really take this seriously, and I'm always happy to see that really many companys are helping with the case and was really happy to receive an e-mail from this company.

Cutey has really lovely bags and they're all made of good quality leather with girly details and lots of color choices. I personally love classic piees the most so I really liked this Florence bag, but I also fell in love with the heart one! Here are my two favorites, go see them all and find your own here !

Parempi myöhään kuin ei milloinkaan!
Joskus pitäisi kyllä ehkä osua myös vähän aikasempaan ajankohtaan.. Mutta siis, sain joku aika sitten sähköpostia Cutey:ltä, koskien heidän ' Bags for Breasts' kampanjaa ja josko voisin tehdä osani sitä varten. Kampanja on sitä miltä kuulostaa, eli rintasyövän ehkäisyn auttamiseen. Cutey lahjoittaa jokaisesta ostetusta laukun hinnasta 10% Women Breast Charity- järjestölle.

Florence

Rome

This would be a perfect Christmas present for someone, because it has more receivers than just one. And Christmas is the time of thinking others!

Have a great weekend, the second last one before Christmaaas!
Ihanaa viikonloppua, toka vika ennen jouluaaa!

Alone at home

Hullo Honeys!

Soo it's Christmas time, a.k.a. the time of secrets. Secrets about the presents that are waiting inside the giftwrap, about the elves behind the trees looking for good kids and grandmom's secret planning of the Christmas dessert.

I personally always keep my presents as surprises until the very end (or, atleast try!) and I love the surprises myself as well, but there's this one secret that I don't think you would mind overhearing and that I would love to share with you guys. Self timer, that is.
I kept my blog as a secret from my friends for really long and even though that nowadays I share it with them, I still fel very shy about taking photos. I often ask my mom or my sister to help if I need outfit pics (which is part of the reason why I post them so seldom) and even then I feel kind of shy. Seriously, I don't know what is wrong with me! Or I do know, but I don't know how to fix it. Slowly but surely, I guess! And tips are appreciated ;)
But that brings me to the point. Since I prefer to not show my oh so professional poses in practise, empty street/house and a camera with self-timer is the perfect solution for me. Yes I know that this is totally what a blogger is not supposed to do and that pics taken by an actual person are a lot better and a lot more interesting, and if  happen to succeed with self timer I might not go shouting about it, but why bother. Most of my photos still are by  humans - or a sloth when I find one who could and would liketo take photos- , but sometimes I have to yell my battle shout, Go self timer!

The topic by the way also refers to the Alone at Home - movie, which is an absolute Christmas must-see! This year no less. But until waiting for it to show on TV I'm enjoying my Transformers advent calender and the christmas lights and smells and everything, I hope you are too! Have a wonderful weekend!

Ja hyvää itsenäisyyspäivää jo etukäteen!

Material Love

Addition to last post's list : getting mail!
And especially getting this kind of mail - my material love shoes came, woo-hoo! They're Tamaris', I found these honeys at Nilson Shoes but because they didn't have my size in camel I ordered these from  putfeetfirst.com . They came pretty fast and I've been super happy with this find, they're soo warm and they also are water resistant (a bit at least) so I don't have to worry about the warmer days when the snow is in the liquid form!

Have a nice weekend and happy December, 20 days anymore! (or 21 out there ;) )
Ihanaa viikonloppua ja ihanaa joulukuuta, 20 päivää enää!

banana bread (without brown sugar)

Hullo honeys!

Two recipe posts in a row - oops and nope, A D U A A isn't turning into a baking blog!
Yesterday we celebrated father's day here in Finland. Happy father's day once more, dad!
I've been out of gift ideas for past four years so I every years just bake a cake. Which suits me fine because my father likes cakes and I like baking, so it's too flies at one strike! I have no idea if you an say that.

But aanyway. this treat has become overly popular all over the world - especially the blog world- from the country of stars and stripes. I've baked it before as well but I hadn't saved the recipe so I had to google again. I started with one  and after mixing he flours and soda I realized that I didn't have brown sugar. THIS IS WHY YOU ALWAYS TAKE ALL THE INGREDIENTS ON THE TABLE BEFORE STARTING. But yeah, no can do, so I googled again and found Vivian Valpuri's recipe and combined it with the first one and ended up creating this:

Moikka muruset!

Multa loppui ideat jo nelisen vuotta sitten, joten nykyään annan lahjaksi vaan itse leivotun kakun. Iskä tykkää syldä niitä ja ite tykkään leipoa niitä, kaksi kärpästä yhdellä iskulla siis!

Tänä vuonan leivoin super yksinkertaisen banaani kakun.

BANANA BREAD

2 cups (about 5 dl) flour / 2 kuppia (noin 5 dl) venhäjauhoja
4 soft & brown-ish bananas / 4 pehmeää ja tummunutta banaania
2,75 dl sugar / 2,75 dl sokeria
1 tsp baking soda / 1 tl soodaa
1 tsp vanilla / 1 tl vanilja sokeria
1/4 tsp salt / 1/4 tl suolaa
130 g margarin / 130 g margariinia
+ margarin for greasing the dish / margariinia vuoan voiteluun

1. Heat the owen up to 175 Celsius degrees and mix the flour, soda, salt and vanilla in a bowl
/ Kuumenna uuni 175C asteeseen ja sekoita jauhot, sooda, suola ja vaniljasokeri kulhossa

 2. mix the sugar and margarin
/ sekoita sokeri ja margariini

3. Smash the bananas with a fork (and have the phone there for recipe)

4.  Grease the dish (yep it's originally supposed to look like a bread, but any other casserole works as well!) , put the dough there and fry it for 45 minutes
/ Rasvaa vuoka (leivältähän tämän herkun alkuperäisesti kuuluisi näyttää mutta mikä tahansa muukin vuoka toimii ihan yhtä hyvin!) ja paista uunissa 45 minuuttia

& Voilá!

In the evening we also went to a restaurant to celebrate dad some more. It was called Gaijing and the food was Asian. Asian food is not my favorite of them all but if you like it any more  I really recommend it! Any opprtunity to wear a dress ( and a bag which has been kind of forgotten in the closet ) is an opportunity I'm using! But I did need my wool socs inside my boots.
And I have to also joy about Friday and Saturday; on Friday I had an evening out with mom and on Saturday I got go with my friends to see the filming of a comedy show called Putous, had a blast!

dress- Primark, bag - DKNY, nailpolish - Essie & woolsocks from my friend

Have a lovely week!
Ihanaa viikkoa!

Apple Pie

Happy Halloween!

Okay, I know I'm late but it is still Halloween weekend!

On Friday we celebrated Halloween with my old classmates with Halloween treats and costumes, I borrowed my sister's old synchronized skating dress from the program Corpse Bride and brought vampire teeth-cookies plus my first ever self carved pumpkin! Had a great night, as always with these girls!
Also yesterday I got to spend time with amazing people, when another friendgroup came over. We baked carrot cake and gingerbreads and drank glög. Yes, food is indeed a huge deal! But more importantly, we officially started Christmas! With Christmas music playing on the backround, it felt like it was already December - whoch it almost is, by the way!
But since christmas is coming, I have to share this Fall-ish recipe with you now. Apple pie it is! I found this recipe from my recipe book whoch was given to me from my grand mother:

Jep, herkut on todellaki  tärkeitä!

APPLE PIE

2 eggs
1 & half dl  sugar
2 dl wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
100g butter / margarine

on top:
3-4 apples (a bit sour ones are better)
1-2 tbsp sugar / brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon
+ butter / margarine and breadcrumb for greasing
+ sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle over the ready pie

Turn the oven to 200 celsius degrees.
Grease and flour the casserole.
Wash the apples and remove the middles, and peel if you want to (grandma's tip: foreign apples always!). Cut the apples into slices.
Melt the butter in a kettle and mix the baking powder with the flour.
Beat the eggs and sugar until smooth foam.
Add the flour-baking powder mixture and cooled down butter to the egg-sugar foam while mixing gently.
Spread the dough into the casserole and put the apple slices on top of it. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon on top. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes - try the pie with a toothpick! If the dough doesn't stick to it, the pie is ready.

OMENAPIIRAKKA

2 kananmunaa
1 & puoli dl sokeria
2 dl vehnäjauhoja
1 tl leivinjauhetta
100 g voita / margariinia

pinnalle:
3-4 omenaa (hapahkoa)
1-2 rkl sokeria / fariinisokeria
1 rkl cinnamon
+ voita / margariinia ja korppujauhoja voiteluun
+ sokeria ja kanelia valmiin piirakan päälle

Laita uuni lämpenemään 200 asteeseen.
Voitele ja jauhota piirakkavuoka.
Pese omenat ja leikkaa ne ohuiksi viipaleiksi. Kuori omenat halutessasi (mummin vinkki: ulkomaiset omenat aina!)

I have to say, that reipes are the hardest texts to translate! Thank pumpkin there's dictionaries!
I wish you a lovely beginning of November! (also that is really weird when translated)

Pakko sanoa, että resesptit on kyllä hankalimpia kääntää! Kurpitsalle kiitos sanakirjoista!
Ihanaa marraskuun alkua! (tämäkin on kyllä käännettynä tosi kummallinen)

Germany travel diary

Hullo Honeys!

How are you?
I finally 'took a grip of my neck' as we Finns say, and collected my pics from our Germany trip here. First of all I want to add something to the packing tips -what I forgot to add there and forgot to take with me- AN EXTRA CAMERA BATTERY/ CHARGER. Yep, I left them home, so of course my camera died on the first day. So all the pics after the Japanese garden are taken with my phone, luckily I had atleast that with me.

But yeah, like I said before, the trip wasn't at all what I expected! I knew that we'd first go to Leverkusen and then to Mosel, but I thought that Leverkusen was only a Bayer city -it has a huge factory and office buildings of theirs, but like the pic above and below can tell, it wasn't Just that- and Mosel sounded like a really dumb place. Haha good attitude I know, but I got proven wrong as the pessimistic thoughts usually do. I also thought that since it was me traveling with my parents, we'd visit every single wine yard there is in the area (which was a lot!), but we went to only one, and it was a beautiful place!

After Leverkusen (which is a small town by Rhine) and visiting Köln with my dad while mom was working, we stayed in a village called Cochem by the Mosel. We also visited other cities by the same river, but Cochem was my favorite.  It was small but it was wonderful! It had a beautiful castle -which we didn't get to visit this time though- and all the buikdings ans restauranst and the river were beautiful! I did use my jogging clothes since I had the motivation because I didn't want to carry useless cothes, and it was one of the loveliest runs I've taken!

Moikka!

small warning; atleast we didn't get inside more than the first square and it seemed like we'd have to go for a tour which are arranged only a couple times a day if we wanted to see more. But the free look was great enough for us! pikku varoitus; emme päässeet etuaulaa pidemmälle sisällä ja vaikutti siltä että enemmän nähdäkseen pitäisi maksaa opaskierroksesta, joita on vain tiettyihin aikoihin, mutta vilkaisu oli tarpeeksi upea ainakin meille

a coffee break opposite of the Dome, german cakes are delicious!
we took the tourist train which was a good idea, because that way we saw a lot and got to our another destinations, the chocolate museum. otimme turistijunan, mikä osoittui hyväksi ideaksi sillä sitä kautta näki Kölnistä paljon ja pääsimme samalla kyydillä seuraavaan kohteeseemme, suklaamuseoon.

the chocolate museum - making of chocolate, history of chocolate and pretty much everything about chocolate - suklaamuseo- suklaan tekeminen, suklaan historia, ja aikalailla kaikki mitä suklaasta voi kertoa

Toivottavasti joku sai matkakuumetta näihin paikkoihin, todellakin suosittelen!

Have a lovely week, it's not long until Friday anymore!
Ihanaa loppuviikkoa, ei enää kauaa perjantaihin!
