Sierra Trip

Hooola! So this time I'll actually tell something more about the trip than just "it was amazing", which it by the way was. But it was also really interesting and teachful. And we saw all the spots (except the coast, I'll hopefully get to see that some other time before I return!) that I saw from the internet before I got here and of which I've heard since I've been here, my Ecuador bucketlist is getting more and more checkmarks and every checkmark is a lot prettier than I ever imagined! 

 /Heipä heei! Tällä kertaa siis aion kertoa meidän Sierra matkastamme vähän muutakin kuin vaan että "oli upea reissu", vaikka sitä se kyllä olikin. Mutat se oli myös kaikinpuolin kiinnostava ja opettavainen. Ja näimme kaikki ne kohteet (paitsi rannikon, jonne toivottavasti pääsen käymään joskus toiste ennen paluutani!) jotka näin netistä ja kirjoista ennen kuin laskeuduin Ecuadoriin, ja siten Ecuador ämpärilistani onkin saamassa koko ajan enemmän ja enemmän check- merkkejä, joista jokainen on ollut paljon parempi kuin olisin edes kuvitellut!

Quito

We started in Quito, the capital, where after the first night together we got up on the Teleferico, from which we could see beautifully almost whole Quito - and llamas! We also went to the Historic centre (an Unesco World Heritage site) and "Mitad del Mundo". There's a big monument at a location called that, but it's not actually the true one. We instead went to the real one, about 100 meters to the North from the monument. There was an interesting museum and exams about the equator - for example we got to see how on the different sides of the line around the planet the water going down a sink spinned to the other direction than on the other side of the line. And that when you stand over the line, you loose 1kg of your mass, which we also got to prove . It was super interesting!

  

/ Reissumme alkoi Quitossa, pääkaupungissa, jossa ensimmäisen yhdessä vieteyn illan jälkeen nousimem aamulla Telefericon huipulle, josta näki hienosti lähes koko Quiton - ja laamoja! Sen lisäksi vierailimme Vanhassa keskustassa (Unescon Maailman perintökohde) ja "Mitad del Mundossa". Quitossa on suuri monumentti joka kulkee sillä nimellä ja merkitsee päiväntasaajan reittiä, mutta joitain vuosia sitten gps-laitteilla pystyttiin todistamaan että monumentti olikin noin 100 metriä pielessä, joten aitoon oikeaan kohtaan tehtiin uusi, pienempi monumentti, jonne me suuntasimme. Siellä oli kiinnostava pieni museo ja päiväntasaaja-kokeita - esimerkiksi näimme miten eri puolilla päiväntasaajaa vesi valui lavuaarista pyörien eri suuntiin (opittiin Biologian tunnilla, mutta en oisi ikinä uskonut näkeväni eroa kahden metrin säteellä!) Ja kun seisoit linjalla, massastasi katosi 1kg, minkä myös pystyimme todistamaan. se oli tosi kiinnostavaa!

Otavalo & Laguna Cuycocha

 The next day we went to Otavalo, for the most famous handwork market in the country. It wasn't the main day of the market (it was a Monday instead of a Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday) so it wasn't on its biggest, but it was still wonderful! Not maybe for the wallet thought, since I bought a lot of souvenirs there. After that we continued our tirp to Laguna Cuicocha to make a small hike around it, which was absolutely beautiful.

/ Seuraavana päivänä suuntasimme Otavaloon, maan kuuluisimmalle käsityömarketille. Vierailemamme päivä ei ollut marketin "pääpäivä", (keskiviikon, lauantain tai sunnuntain sijaan oli maanantai) joten se ei ollut suurimmillaan, mutta oli silti todella hyvä. Ei tosin ehkä lompakolle niinkään, sillä ostin sieltä paaljon tuliaisia. Otavalon jälkeen matkamme jatkui Laguna Cuicochalle, jossa patikoimme jonkin aikaa todella kauniissa maisemissa.

Antisana & Baños

 The next day we went to the reserve of the volcan Antisana (which we didn't get to see because it was too cloudy) and hiked up some hours there (it was cold btw! +4000m above sea level does freeze the air a bit), then for the night we drew to Baños.We did some free walking around in Baños and the next day we hiked up to a hill,until a big Cross. After that we drew to my favorite, the Casa del Arbol (Which is also known as the Swing at the End of the World)! It has actually lately been in many blogger´s traveling lists, and for a reason! The views are really pretty and most of all you can take amazing photos there haha! And plus it's  a swing so it's also a nice experience. We got a little extra experience from the erupting Tungurahua close by, which we couldn't see because of all the ash but we could hear its erupting sounding like a thunder. After that we returned to our really nice (my favorite, the staff was so sweet and the breakfast was delicious and the prices from 7.50$ to 9.50$!) hostal where by coincidence also stayed a group of British volunteers who we met in Quito, and after what we went to the therapic pools of Baños, which look horrible, because the water comes from the Volcanoe Tungurahua, and is for that reason really hot. At the same place there are also cold swimming pools and everything fro between. It was mandatory to use a swimming hat, for that reason the pinup look haha!

/ Seuraavana päivänä menimme Antisana-tulivuoren luonnonpuistoon (itse tulivuorta emme tosin nähneet sillä oli liian pilvistä) ja (oli muuten kylmä! Yli 400m metrin korkeudessa päiväntasaajan aurinko ei enää hirveästi lämmittänyt) ja illaksi ajoimme minibussillamme Bañosiin. Kävelimme vähäsen ympäriinsä ja seuraavana päivänä kiipeilimme erään kukkulan huipulle, suuren Baños-ristin juurelle. Seuraavana oli koko reissun oma suosikkini, Casa del arbol! (joka tunnetaan myös nimellä Maailman lopun keinu) Kyseinen turistikohde on itseasiassa esiintynyt mnien matkabloggaajien postauksissa lähiaikoina paljonkin, eikä syyttä! Maisemat ovat todella kauniit ja ennen kaikkea sieltä saa upeita kuvia haha! Ja lisäksi onhan se kaikkien keinujen tapaan kiva kokemus. Ja meidän tapauksessamme saimme vielä vähän lisäkokemusta vieressä purkautuvan Tungurahuan ansiosta. Emme nähneet laavaa tai edes itse tulivuorta sillä ilmassa oli niin paljon tuhkaa, mutta kuulimme sen ukkoselta kuulostavat äänet kyllä! "Puumajan" jälkeen palasimme motelliimme (joka oli muuten oma lempparini,henkilökunta oli todella mukavaa ja aamupala oli super hyvä ja hinnat olivat vain 7.50$-9.50$!) jossa oleskeli sattumalta myös Quitossa törmäämäämme ryhmään brittiläisiä vapaaehtoisi. Hotellilta jatkoimme seuraavaksi Bañosin vesiterapia-altaille, joiden vesi on tulivuori Tungurahuan lämmittämää - kylmä altaita lukuunottamatta. Uimalakin käyttö oli pakollista ja ostimme kaikki samaiset Bañosista, siitä syystä pin up - look haha!

Riobamba & Volcan Chimborazo

The next day we started our trip towards Riobamba. We left our suitcases in the hostal (also a really pretty one) and got prepared for climbing Chimborazo, the world's highest volcanoe. It hasn't been active for thousands of years (except that now they're found some unsure signs of activity again) so it doesn't really count as a volcanoe, but with its top being at the altitude of 6300 and the location only few hundred kilometers away from the equator, what makes it the closest point on Earth closest to the sun. We drove with our minibus until the refugee at the altitude of 4800m, and climbed up to another refugee and after that a laguna, which was at 5100m. It's such a short distance right? But the altitude makes it atleast 10 times harder so I almost fainted from my head ache when we stopped in a small hotel on the way! (one night costed around 30$ IN A VOLCANOE #onlyinecuador) It was a lot harder for the head than for the body, even thought breathing obviously was the main problem. But I'm so happy that I didn't faint so I got to walk until the tiny lake and we also got to see snow!! Never knew how much I cold miss it haha! After chimborazo we drank some hot chocolates in a cafe at the first refugee (1.25$, Ecuadorian prices will never not-amaze me) and then returned to our hostal, rested a bit and went to a small Riobamba ciytour and ate dinner. (every day we had a breakfast, lunch and a dinner, which let me tell you was way too much food! Normally here we only eat a lunch, because it's big!) It's such a pretty city, one of my favorites!

/ Seuraavaksi suuntasimme kohti Riobambaa. Perille saavuttuamme jätimme laukut motelliimme (kanssa tosi kaunis yksilö!), laitoimme lisää vaatetta päälle ja suuntasimme maailman korkeinta tulivuorta, Chimborazoa kohti. Se ei ole ollut aktiivisena tuhansiin vuosiin (paitsi että nyt lähistöltä löydettiin aktiivisuuteen viittaava laavapuro?) joten virallisesti sitä ei tulivuoreksi lasketa, mutta 6300 metrin korkuisen huippunsa sekä päiväntasaajan läheisyytensä kanssa sillä on joka tapauksessa hallussaan maailman ennätys; Maapallon lähin piste aurinkoa. Ajoimme minibussillamme tukikohtaan 4800 metrin korkeudessa, josata aloitimme hitaan tallustelumme. Kapusimme lammelle 5100 metrin korkeuteen, ja vaikka etäisyyttä ei niinkään ollut niin aikaa ssiihen kului, koska korkeus merenpinnasta teki kulkemisesta niin vaivalloista. Viiden kilometrin korkeudessa olevassa pienen pienessä hotellissa (jossa yöpyminen maksoi muistaakseni 30$, vaikka oltiin TULIVUORELLA #onlyinEcuador) melkein pyörryin koska päähän otti niin kovasti. Mutta olen oikein iloinen etten pyörtynyt että jaksoin muitten mukana kiivetä että sain nähtyä lammen ja jopa lunta!! En oisi ikinä uskonut miten ikävä lunta voisikaan tulla haha! Alas laskeuduttuamme joimme kaakaot (1.25$, ecuatorilaiset hinant ei koskaan lakkaa hämmästyttämättä!) ja sitten palasimme motelliimme, lepäsimme vähän aikaa ja kävelimme piene Riobamba kierroksen ja suuntasimme illalliselle. (söimme joka päivä aamupalan lisäksi lounaan ja illallisen, mikä oli kyllä ihan liikaa ruokaa! Täällä kun annokset on 99% ajasta niin isoja että sillä tavanomaisella pelkällä lounaalla pärjäisi vallan mainiosti) Riobamba on tosi kaunis kaupunki, yksi lemppareistani!

 

Cuenca, Incapirca & Cajas

 The next day we started going towards Cuenca, and stopped at the oldest church of Ecuador and at Incapirca which were on our way. It's the biggest incaruins in Ecuador, and it was really pretty! After that we continued our next stop in Cuenca, an Ortega & Hijos - sombrero factory, where they make panama-hats. Which by the way, a un fact, are actually Ecuador hats, but they just happened to get a false name some years ago when lots of foreigners saw all the people from Panana using them. We got to see every part of preparing the hats since it was a factory-museum, and it was really interesting. After that we went to our hostal, which this time was a youth hostal and the workers were almost all backpackers who volunteered there to be able to sleep and eat for free - we talked a long chat with an argentino and learned a lot about their accent and about the world. But before that conversaion we ate of course (seriously, we kept talking about our foobabies the whole trip!). The next day we went for a hike in the Cajas - a big, beautiful national park in the altitue of around 4000m. After that we also had a small walking tour in Cuenca (even prettier than Riobamba, the historical center was named as a Unesco herital site, and is full of foreigners who have decided to spend their retirement years there), which we continued without our guide and found other Inca ruins, where we bought belgian waffles from an Belgian man who had moved to Ecuador to live with his wife. One of my favorite parts of this whole year has been meeting so many interesting people, you would have no idea what kind of stories people have to tell before you ask. The same we got to prove in the night when we accidently started one of the most interesting conversations ever with a argentinan backpacker gir, who was selling handmade jewellery. I asked her how does she do the bracelets, and we learned so much important stuff about life over all. We also celebrated our 200 days in Ecuador with delicious ice creams.

/ Seuraavana päivänä läksimme Cuencaa kohti, ja matkalla pysähdyimme Ecuadorin vanhimmalla kirkolla ja Incapircalla, joka on Ecuadorin suurin ja parhaiten säilynyt inkaraunio, ja tosi kaunis! Historiakierroksen jälkeen seuraava pysäkki oli Cuencan rajojen sisäpuolella Ortega & Hijos - sobrereotehtaalla, jossa panamahattu tehtaasta (jotka ovat siis oikeasti Ecuadorista kotoisin, mutta sattuivat saamaan nimensä kun ulkomaalaiset näkivät suuren määrän panamalaisia käyttämässä kyseistä hattua.) Pääsimme näkemään hattujen valmistuksen vaihe vaiheelta ja lopuksi myös ostaa paikalla käsinvalmistettuja hattuja, halvin tosin oli 30$ ja hinnat jatkuivat ainakin muutamaan lisänollaan asti. Sieltä suuntasimme motelliimme, joka tällä kertaa oli nuorisomotelli jonka lähes kaikki työntekijät olivat reppureissaajia jotka toimivat vapaaehtoisina ruoka- ja nukkumapaikka-palkalla. Meillä oli hirmu kiinnostava keskustelu mm. erään argentiinalaisen kanssa heidän aksentistaan ja maailmasta! Mutta ennen kyseistä juttutuokiota söimme tietysti (ihan tosissaan, koko matkan jatkuvana aiheena oli jatkuvasti kasvavat foodbabyt!). Seuraavana aamuna menimme patikoimaan Cajas - luonnonpuistoon (sisään päästetään maximissaan vain 80 ihmistä päivässä) noin 4000 metrin korkeuteen. Parin tunnin vaelluksen jälkeen palasimme Cuencan vanhaan keskustaan (joka on myös Unescon maailman perintökohde, vielä Riopambaa paljon kauniimpi! Samaa ajattelee moni ulkomainen eläkeläinen, heitä kun asustelee siellä noin 10 000 ) pienelle kävelykirrokselle jota jatkoimme ilman opasta kavereiden kesken toisille, pienemmille inkaraunioille, josta löysimme myös belgialaisen vaimonsa perään muuttaneen miehen pitämässä herkullista vohvelikojua. Yksi tämän koko vaihtarikokemuksen lempipuolistani onkin ollut kaikenlaisiin mielenkiintoisiin ihmisiin tutustuminen. Ikinä ei uskoisi miten kiinnostavia elämäntarinoita taikka -filosofioita sitä löytää "hei":n ja muutaman muun sanan takaa. Samaa todistettiin Cuencan katedraalin portailla kun päädyin kysymään eräältä rannekoruja askartelevalta tytöltä kuinka sitä tehtiin, ja tämä kyseinen argentiinalainen reppureissaaja sai meidät kaikki puhumaan samasta aiheesta ja elämänkatsemuksesta keskenämme vielä seuraavana aamuna!  Samaisen keskustelun iltana juhlimme kanssa 200 kulunutta päiväämme Ecuadorissa.

The next morning our trip was sadly already over, but a good thing was that we still had one night in Quito. Some of our 12-headed group started their trip towards their hometowns already on the way, but most of us went to Quito to eat pizza once more together and stay up all night just talking. Leaving exchange students is always so hard, because with them it's so easy to feel like you've known each other forever! But after this kind of trip there was for sure no way to stay sad!

/ Seuraavana aamuna meidän 10 päivän reissumme oli kaikkien harmiksi jo ohitse, mutta onneksi meillä oli edessä vielä yksi yö Quitossa. Osa meidän 12-henkisestä ryhmästämme lähti omien kotikaupunkiensa suuntiin jo matkan varrella, mutta suurin osa meistä jatkoi Quitoon jossa söimme pizzaa yhdessä ja valvoimme puoli yötä jutellen kaikesta mahdollisesta. Vaihtareiden hyvästeleminen on aina yhtä haikeata sillä niiden kanssa tuntuu jo hetkessä siltä että on tunnettu ikuisuuden, mutta tälläisen matkan jälkeen ei kyllä voinut masentaa mielialaa mikään!
